Palmitoleic Acid: Sources, Function, and Why Purity Matters

If you've read our piece on what the research actually shows about Omega-7 benefits, you already know palmitoleic acid is the fatty acid doing most of the work. This one goes a level deeper: where it actually comes from, what your body does with it, and why the source you pick matters more than most labels let on.

What it is

Palmitoleic acid is a monounsaturated fatty acid, chemical shorthand 16:1n-7. Your body already makes some of it on its own, through an enzyme called stearoyl-CoA desaturase that converts palmitic acid (a common saturated fat) into palmitoleic acid. So it's not classified as essential the way omega-3s are. That said, dietary intake is still low for most people, since the foods that contain meaningful amounts of it are not everyday foods.

Where it comes from

A few natural sources stand out, and they're not the ones you'd guess:

Macadamia nuts. Roughly 19-20% of the fatty acid content in macadamia nut oil is palmitoleic acid, the highest concentration of any common food.

Sea buckthorn. The berry pulp oil (not the seed oil, they're different) runs about 32-42% palmitoleic acid depending on the growing conditions and cultivar. This is the source behind most of the "Omega-7" supplements you'll see marketed around sea buckthorn.

Fish oil, particularly anchovy. This is a smaller percentage by weight than sea buckthorn, but it's the source Provinal is built on, and there's a reason for that beyond tradition. It comes down to what else travels along with the palmitoleic acid.

Why the source matters as much as the amount

Here's the part that gets skipped in most "which Omega-7 should I buy" comparisons: every one of these natural sources also carries a meaningful amount of palmitic acid, the saturated fat that palmitoleic acid gets confused with in casual conversation. Sea buckthorn oil, for instance, runs around 22% saturated palmitic acid alongside its palmitoleic content. Macadamia oil carries its own mix of saturated and monounsaturated fats beyond just the 16:1n-7 fraction.

That's not a knock on those sources. It just means a supplement made from raw sea buckthorn or macadamia oil is giving you palmitoleic acid diluted by, and mixed in with, a fat you're probably already getting plenty of elsewhere in your diet.
