Omega-7 refers to a family of monounsaturated fats, and the one that matters most here is palmitoleic acid. Heart health
This is where most of the research attention has gone. Palmitoleic acid has been studied for its relationship to cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and the general pattern across the literature is that it may help support already-healthy lipid levels rather than correct unhealthy ones. Worth knowing too: not every study agrees on the mechanism. A 1994 trial in the Journal of Lipid Research found that palmitoleic acid behaved more like a saturated fat than a monounsaturated one when it came to LDL cholesterol in men with high cholesterol, which is the opposite of what you'd expect from an "unsaturated" fat. Anyone telling you it definitely lowers cholesterol is oversimplifying it.
Metabolism and blood sugar
The more interesting research, honestly, is on metabolism. Palmitoleic acid has been described in the scientific literature as a "lipokine," meaning it may act something like a hormone in how it signals to fat and muscle tissue. Lab studies have found it increases GLUT4 content and glucose uptake in fat cells, which is a mechanism tied to insulin sensitivity. A 2017 review in Advances in Nutrition covers this in depth, and a 2018 review in Molecular Nutrition & Food Research looked specifically at whether palmitoleic acid holds up as a real strategy for managing metabolic and inflammatory conditions.
The honest answer from both reviews: promising in animal and cell studies, genuinely under-researched in humans. That's not a knock on the ingredient. It's just where the science is right now.
Skin
Palmitoleic acid is a natural component of skin lipids, and it tends to decline with age, which is part of why it's shown up in skin-hydration research. This is a smaller body of research than the heart and metabolic work, but it's a consistent thread across the literature.
Where purity comes in
Here's the part that doesn't get talked about enough: not all omega-7 is the same. Generic sources, including some sea buckthorn and fish oil blends, carry a meaningful amount of palmitic acid alongside the palmitoleic acid, and palmitic acid is a saturated fat with a very different profile.
