Omega-7 and Dry Eyes: What the Tear Film Research Shows

Dry eyes usually get blamed on "not enough tears," but that's only part of the story. Most cases actually come down to the tear film breaking down too fast, and the layer that controls that is mostly made of fat, not water.

The tear film has three layers, and one of them is oil

Your tear film is a thin, three-part structure: a mucus layer against the eye, a watery middle layer, and an oily outer layer on top. That outer oil layer is called the lipid layer, and it's produced by tiny glands along your eyelid margin called meibomian glands. Its job is simple but critical: slow down evaporation of the watery layer underneath.

When the meibomian glands don't produce enough lipid, or produce a poor-quality mix of it, the water layer evaporates too quickly. This is called evaporative dry eye, and it's the most common form of dry eye disease, more common than the type caused by not producing enough tears in the first place.

Where Omega-7 fits in

Palmitoleic acid (Omega-7) is a fatty acid your body already incorporates into cell membranes and lipid pools throughout the body, and the tear film's lipid layer is, unsurprisingly, made of fatty acids. That's the basic rationale behind Omega-7 supplementation for dry eye: support the raw material the meibomian glands work with.

One caveat matters here. The strongest clinical trial in this space used sea buckthorn oil, not purified marine-derived Omega-7. A 2010 randomized, double-blind trial published in the Journal of Nutrition gave 100 participants with dry eye symptoms either 2 grams of sea buckthorn oil or a placebo daily for three months. The sea buckthorn group saw significantly less increase in tear film osmolarity (a marker of dry eye severity) over the cold season, along with less redness and burning.

That's a real, well-designed trial, and it's genuinely encouraging. But sea buckthorn oil is a mixed-fatty-acid oil containing omega-3s, omega-6s, and antioxidants alongside its Omega-7 content, not a purified palmitoleic acid product. So while it supports the general idea that dietary fatty acid intake can influence tear film health, it isn't a direct trial of purified Omega-7 the way TearHealth delivers it. We'd rather say that plainly than let a strong headline number imply more than the study actually tested.

What purity changes

The same purity argument we make for heart health applies here. Generic Omega-7 sources, including most sea buckthorn extracts, carry palmitic acid alongside the palmitoleic acid. Purification strips that out, concentrating the fatty acid that's actually relevant to the tear film's lipid composition rather than diluting it with a saturated fat that isn't part of that mechanism at all.

The bottom line

Evaporative dry eye is a lipid-layer problem, and Omega-7 is a biologically plausible piece of that puzzle. The direct clinical evidence right now comes from sea buckthorn oil, not purified Omega-7 specifically, so treat this as a promising, mechanism-backed option rather than a proven cure. If your dry eye symptoms are persistent or severe, that's a conversation for your eye doctor, not a supplement bottle.
