Sea Buckthorn vs Fish Oil Omega-7: A Real Comparison

Almost every "Omega-7 supplement" on the market is made from one of two sources: sea buckthorn or marine fish oil. They're not the same, and the difference is bigger than most product labels let on.

Sea buckthorn: higher concentration, more baggage

Sea buckthorn berry pulp oil runs about 32-42% palmitoleic acid by fatty acid content, a genuinely high concentration. But it also carries a substantial amount of palmitic acid, a saturated fat, alongside it, roughly 22% in typical sea buckthorn oil. You're getting a real dose of Omega-7, diluted by a fat you're not trying to add more of.

Marine fish oil: lower raw concentration, better purification pathway

Fish oil, particularly anchovy, carries a smaller percentage of palmitoleic acid by weight than sea buckthorn does. That sounds like a disadvantage until you look at what happens next: this is the source Provinal is purified from, and the purification process is what actually determines the final product, not the starting concentration. A purified marine-source softgel can deliver a higher percentage of palmitoleic acid, with the palmitic acid stripped out, than an unrefined sea buckthorn oil ever will.

The spec that actually matters

Starting concentration in the raw material is not the same thing as what ends up in the capsule. Purity after processing is the number worth checking, and it's usually not the number front and center on the label. A standard Provinal softgel delivers roughly 210mg of purified palmitoleic acid at about 50% concentration, a meaningfully different profile than what an unrefined oil of either type provides.

Which one should you buy?

If you're comparing a raw sea buckthorn supplement to a purified marine-source one, the purified version is doing more of the actual work per milligram, even if the sea buckthorn label boasts a higher starting percentage. That's the whole rationale behind Cardia 7 using Provinal instead of sea buckthorn oil.

The bottom line

Sea buckthorn has a higher natural concentration of Omega-7 but carries more palmitic acid along with it. Marine oil starts lower but is the source behind the most thoroughly purified Omega-7 products available. Check what's actually in the capsule, not just what the raw oil started as.
